PRODUCTION DETAILS:
Our showreels are shot on Sony HDV camera in 16:9 widescreen using a single camera set up and shooting both actors seperately. Audio is produced via Rode boom microphone (shoots requiring lapel microphones will incur additional equipment hire charge). Locations are kept simple and must be reasonably able to be controlled for sound, light and access.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS
Supply actor(s) to work with. $200 per actor, per scene. This fee is passed on in full to the actor we provide. These will be trained and/or experienced actors.
Special equipment. If the shoot requires additional or special equipment such as dolly or additional lighting gear, the cost will be passed on to you per a quote.
additional DVD copies @ $20 per DVD
WHAT SCRIPTED MATERIAL WE RECOMMEND
Scenes from film or tv with 2 or more actors (we will not shoot monologues, scenes you wrote, theatre scenes or scenes without a 2nd actor present on the set)
Keep it simple. The scene can be very simple so long as it provides the opportunity for the viewer to taste your screen presence and be engaged by you.
Scenes should ideally be approx 90 seconds long (max 2mins). This translates to max 2 pages of text (film script layout)
WHO SHOULD MAKE A SHOWREEL?
The answer is simple. Trained actors with 2+ years of full time training at a leading professional drama school including at least 50hrs in front of the camera OR experienced professionals with a decent body of professional speaking roles in film, tv and theatre under their belt. (Extras and/or TVC experience do not count. Short films are a dime a dozen. So we are talking about experience in feature films, television drama or professional theatre if you have not been to a leading drama school.) We are not trying to be elitist. We simply know from experience that in order to make a positive impression on leading casting directors and agents your skills need to be at a level where you are ready to work professionally in speaking roles. If your skills are not up to that level, all your showreel is going to do is demonstrate is inadequacy.
COMMON MISTAKES ACTORS MAKE WHEN CREATING A SHOWREEL
Undertaking the creation of a showreel before your skills are at a level where it is worth your while. Too many actors are in a hurry to be a star yesterday and simply do not undertake adequate training before attempting to get an agent and/or meet casting directors. If you expose yourself prematurely to these industry professionals, you are doing yourself a great disservice.
Failing to ensure the showreel demonstrates professional production quality eg. Having a mate shoot it on their handycam, capturing sound using only the camera microphone rather than a proper boom mic or lapel mic, poor lighting etc
Choosing the wrong material. Choosing material you WANT to be cast for, rather than material you are LIKELY to be cast for. You must choose material that suits your age, type, look, skill level and strengths. Actors are too often wildly unrealistic about their own look, type and strengths.
Going for too much. Actors always want to shoot "the big scene". Massive drama with high stakes. Please remember that agents and casting directors see these all the time and do get tired of them. The purpose of your showreel is to provide a taste of your screen presence, personality and to some extent your skills. Only go for the big scene if you are going to do a shit-hot job and nail it, and even then, think seriously about combining it with a second scene that is much simpler and more spare.
Rushing the process by leaving too little time before a deadline.
Using a non-actor or weak actor to work opposite them.
Choosing the wrong showreel provider. This might include choosing:
A cheap showreel provider rather than a good one
Someone who has great technical expertise but lacks expertise working with actors.
Someone with little or no experience shooting drama. (As opposed to commercials, music clips etc.)
Someone who doesn't know what output files you need to upload for AT2 and Showcast or how to create them.
Someone who does not possess specific expertise and experience shooting showreel scenes for actors.
