Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

Q: How do I know which training stream is right for me?

A: The training streams are designed to cater for different levels of experience and for different levels of commitment to training. First you should decide what level of commitment you would like to make to your training, then choose an option according to your level of experience.

Actors seeking to make a comprehensive commitment to full professional training should consider the 2 Year Intensive Program.

Actors seeking a short term commitment only should consider truth Master Classes or Advanced Scene Study Classes. Master Classes are graded to cater for all levels (advanced, intermediate, beginner) and offer a focus on core technique and process concepts. Advanced Scene Study Classes are for actors with extensive previous training and/or experience offering a focus on advanced script work only. Both these streams offer a commitment of 8 weeks at a time only.

Q: How much experience do I need to apply for Advanced Scene Study Classes?

A: Entry to our Advanced Scene Study Class is via audition only. Each case will be treated seperately and on its own merits. As a guide though, applicants should have completed a minimum of 2 years of previous training (at a professional drama school - please note youth classes or performing arts high schools are not considered professional drama schools) and/or professional experience.

Q: What is the difference between the 2 Year Intensive Program and Truth Master Classes?

A: Both streams work through our unique training program, moving step by step through 6 training modules. The differences are flexibility, commitment and priority treatment. 2 Year students make a purposeful commitment for the full duration of the program and enjoy priority treatment with respect to studio stage productions and placement in advanced classes. Master Classes students commit for only 8 weeks at a time, maintain the flexibility to take time off or undertake fewer classes per week if desired, but can only access roles in stage productions and placement in advanced classes on a 'where-available' basis.

Q: Can I apply if I have finished school but am only 17 years old?

A: Yes, prospective students must be at least 17 years old at the date of application. Your application will be valid provided you will turn 18 within your first year of classes.

Q: What are the typical ages of students in the Master Classes?

A: Our Master Classes are open to all actors 18 years and over. The classes tend to attract a broad spectrum of ages from school leavers right through to mature age actors with extensive experience. The bulk of our students are aged 20-35 years.

Q: Are any forms of financial assistance available?

A: No. The Actors Studio is an independent training institution. HECS and AUSTUDY are not available.

Q: How many students in each class?

A: Class sizes are limited to a maximum of 15 persons.

Q: How long is each class?

A: Each class runs for a duration of 4 hours.

Q: Does the studio offer drop-in classes?

A: No. We believe continuity and application over a period of time are a more effective approach to training. Drop in classes tend to offer a quick fix of creativity rather than a tangible development outcome. This is not our focus.

Q: Do I need to BOOK IN ADVANCE for an observation class?

A: Yes. Advance bookings are essential for observation classes. Bookings can be made by telephoning the studio a few days ahead of time.

Q: Are the classes suitable for recreational, public speaking or self development purposes?

A: No. Our training program is intensively geared toward preparing committed performers for professional work in theatre, film and television.

Q: Does the studio accept international students?

A: Yes, however a high level of English language proficiency is required. Students for whom English is a second language are advised to seek an appointment with the studio prior to enrolling for classes to assess their suitability for our program.

Q: Why do I need a showreel?

A: A professional showreel is used primarily for demonstrating your skills to a prospective agent from whom you are seeking representation. Any reputable actors agent (different from an extras agents or modelling agents) will ask to see your work on camera before taking you onto their books. The showreel is sometimes also used by your agent (or you) to market to casting directors.

Q: How long should my showreel be and what should be on it?

A: A good showreel should be no more than 3-4 minutes long. It should demonstrate type, look, emotional range and show your acting skills at their strongest. Scene work is generally best. Professional film and TV work should take precedence if you have any. followed by scene work shot especially for your showreel. Monologues or stage work on video are a waste of time. Footage from acting classes is also aesthetically undesireable due to the simplicity of production, lack of sets, editing etc. Commercials can be included to demonstrate your employability but should not dominate the reel.

Q: When should I make a showreel?

A: A professional showreel is really only of any value once your development as an actor has reached a stage where you have something to showcase. As a minimum actors should have completed one year of comprehensive training plus specialised training in on-camera technique. Many actors try to compile showreels before they have undertaken adequate amounts of training, invariably all they end up demonstrating is that their skills are not yet at a professional level.
